Meet Mark Jones, LAMFT, LAPC, NCC
My journey from technology specialist to a dedicated mental health counselor paints a unique portrait of professional evolution.
With over two decades in the technology sector, I navigated the intricate world of network architecture for fiber optic communications networks. My career spanned roles within a U.S.-based network operator as well as two leading equipment manufacturers. A noteworthy role in my career was serving as the chairman of a United Nations technical subcommittee, responsible for the development of global standards for fiber optic networks. This international exposure allowed me to collaborate with experts from diverse cultures and broaden my horizons.
I bring a solid academic foundation to my current role, with a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, alongside master's and bachelor's degrees from Oklahoma State University. These degrees reflect a background of analytical thinking and research, adding depth to my mental health counseling practice.
Today, my professional identity includes several noteworthy credentials: I am a licensed Associate Marriage & Family Therapist (LAMFT, # AMFT000740), a licensed Associate Professional Counselor (LAPC, # APC008356), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Both licenses are in the state of Georgia. I’ve completed Gottman Method Couples Therapy level 1 and level 2 trainings and am a certified facilitator for Prepare/Enrich, with experiences using both with clients. In addition, most of the requirements for my becoming an EMDR certified therapist are complete. These credentials signify a commitment to personal growth, to providing the best service to clients, and to enhancing my value in the mental health industry. As I pursue dual licensure as an LPC and LMFT in Georgia, I am currently fortunate to work under the direction of Tiffany Tufford, LPC (Sage Counseling Associates, LLC), and supervision of Christopher Wheelus, PhD, LPC, MFT.
My educational background includes a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, supported by graduate certificates in Marriage & Family Therapy and Trauma Counseling, all obtained at Richmont Graduate University.
People often ask me why the change of careers from engineering to mental health counseling? In short, my previous career required more travel than I wanted, was too far removed from enhancing people’s lives, and was in a shrinking industry with frequent layoffs. The thrill of solving problems was no longer present in my roles and I wanted greater freedom to manage my own schedule. My passion was to help people.
I am genuinely dedicated to the well-being of my clients. My specialization lies in assisting clients to identify and reach their personal goals by addressing the issues that burden them. Regardless of their presenting problem, my holistic approach encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. In therapy, my methods are tailored to each client's unique needs. For individuals, I often employ therapeutic techniques like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In couples therapy, I often use the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Regardless of the client, I approach challenges with a lens that incorporates family systems and trauma-informed perspectives.
My diverse life experiences, from living overseas to working as an engineer, coupled with my continual education as a counselor, enable me to relate to a broad spectrum of clients. While my Christian faith deeply influences my life, my focus in therapy is assisting clients in achieving their goals in harmony with their individual beliefs and values.
Beyond my professional life, I enjoy various hobbies, including caving, quality time with friends and family, watching movies, and immersing myself in books. Hiking, playing tennis, road biking, and playing golf are also on my list of interests.
What about letting me help you on your journey toward personal growth, healing, and achieving your mental health goals? I’m interested in seeing you overcome life's challenges and embrace brighter tomorrows.
